Topic: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

**** Please note: where we mention 'Copy page', this has been changed to 'Add page' for usability reasons - the actual feature is not affected, just the wording used. ****

Your users (and you) are able to create exact copies of pages based on existing pages on their website.

Firstly, you must enable this for the particular user by visiting:
Users > Permissions > User settings

Check the box to enable this user to copy pages.

Enable the copying of pages

A new item will appear in that user's menu:

Copy item appearing in the menu

Click the Copy menu item and you'll be taken to a page which resembles the one below. Drag the page you would like to copy to the desired folder location on the right hand of the screen (the folder in which the file will be copied to will highlight in green)

Choose a new name

Choose a unique name for your newly copied page:

Choose a new name

When you have chosen a name for the page, click 'Save new page' and you will be taken to the new page to begin editing it:

You will be taken to edit the new page

If the original page was not editable, then this new page too will not be editable and you should assign any edit areas required. If, however, there are some areas which were editable on the original page, these characteristics will appear on the new page.

Re: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

I have changed the permissions for my users, but the copy page tab is not appearing within the CMS.  Is there any reason why this could be?

Re: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

Hi Mike, I've edited your post to protect your email address.

I've just logged in to both user accounts the the "Clone page" tab appears for both. The feature hasn't been enabled for your account (the admin). You can enable it for your account here:
Account > My account > Clone pages

Re: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

Once I create a new page, how do I add it to the navigation bar?

Re: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

The page will appear automatically in the sitemap drop-down menu but you will need to actually add a menu item if you want this page to accessed. This will need to be done by someone with access to the site design or you could always make the menu editable too and add a menu item that way.

Re: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

Re: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

I have just successfully copied the page: .../en/acces.html and created the page .../en/new-page.html

Could you please explain in more detail the problem you are experiencing?

Re: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

Hi admin,
I have realy a hard time trying to give a cms acces to my customer, for only 2 pages in the site. We are not abble to define the "edit zone" for them
Could you please help.

Re: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

Could you send us the URLs to the pages you're having problems with. Feel free to email the URLs to us.

Also which user is having problems editing the pages? Have you checked to make sure they have permission to edit those pages? You can check this here:
Users > Permissions > Restrict pages

Re: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

Hi there,

Just trying out your system for a client in Australia

www.atomlighting.com.au/

Have created a new directory that I'm developing on

www.atomlighting.com.au/CMS

Have created a user and checked Copy Page on User Setting

But when I'm logged in and try to Add page, I can only see 16 html doc instead of 21 that I have on the server

Please could you help?

Thanks,

John

Re: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

Hi John, the Add page section will use the Sitemap to display a list of pages that you may copy. By default SimpleCMS will crawl your site and generate a list of links. It will only find pages that are linked to from your website's home page. So if you haven't linked to a page it won't find it.

You can add your own sitemap to SimpleCMS instead. For more information see this page:
http://smplc.ms/xmlsitemap

I hope this helps.

Re: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

I had a client create a new page in the system, then he wanted to link to it from another page, and he couldn't figure out how to do it. When he highlighted the text to link, and clicked on the "Link" option on the editing menu, there is no option there for him to browse/navigate to find the newly created page to link to.

I told him to navigate to the newly created page via the Sitemap on the top toolbar, copy the URL/page link for the newly created page, and then use that for his hyperlink that he originally wanted to create elsewhere.

Although that method works for him, its not very intuitive/user-friendly. Is there an easier way to do this, and I'm just totally overlooking it? Or this just the way the system is?

Thanks...
Mitch

Re: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

This is something which we are aware of and will be adding in the next incarnation of the system which is due out soon - as you say, currently it's not as intuitive as we hope and believe the rest of the system to be. If your client is happy to muddle along for now then V3 of SimpleCMS will fix this.

Re: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

Thanks, Gavin. Glad to hear that will be smoothed out in the next version..

Mitch

Re: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

This is great! Thanks.

Re: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

I run a Lynchburg Web Design company (www.vision2life.com) and i'm currently testing your system. When will you be coming up with V3 of your software. overall i really like your system but there are some things i'm not crazy about: ie: I like to see a better way of creating links to existing pages. Also, how come i'm not able to upload images from pc to system. Thanks. Really looking forward to your new system. tx.

Re: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

Hi armando, the new version will be around New Year.

You can upload images from your PC to the system - when you click on the image icon a dialog box appears and you will see an "Upload" tab on the dialog box, from there you may select local files to upload.

The new version will also address the issues around links to existing pages. Currently you have to enter in the URL, it would make more sense to have that option along with being able to select a page from the sitemap.

Please let us know if you have any other suggestions or feedback.

Re: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

Yeh, guys, any suggestions for V3 of the system, please do pop them on these forums. It's almost ready and is such a radical change from what we have now, it's actually got a different name ... we'll let you know soon!

Re: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

Any idea when V3 will be issued? I have the same problem with client asking about how to link to an existing or new page.

Re: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

I apologize if this has been asked elsewhere on this forum. In addition to creating new pages, is it possible within the SimpleCMS system for the end user to create new directories as well?

Thanks,
Mitch

Re: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

Hi Mitch - there is no way for users to create directories at the moment

Re: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

I set up a dummy account to test this before sending to client. When logged in as client the add page worked fine, but it did not duplicate the permissions of the original. When I logged in as admin the page had the restricted cross through it. It wasn't until I unrestricted it as admin that the user was able to see the editable areas.

Re: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

Have you checked your page permissions?

Re: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

Yes. thats what i said . it didn't duplicate the permissions from the original page.

Re: Copying / duplicating / adding pages

Hi Aaran, I've just checked your account and have you haven't got any permissions on any of your pages therefore any new pages that are added won't have any permissions assigned to them so your users will be able to edit the page.

I have tested this with my account and it all works for me. If you are still having problems, could you give us a step by step process of what you are doing so I can try to replicate it and resolve any issues you may experience.
